Zambia Sugar Distributes 2,560 Seedlings in Major Tree Planting Drive

Zambia Sugar Plc has distributed 2,560 fruit and indigenous tree seedlings to employees as part of its ongoing Tree Planting Campaign, strengthening efforts to address climate change and promote sustainable land management.

The seedlings were given to employees for planting in their homes and communities. The company said the initiative aims to increase tree cover, improve food security, and encourage active participation in environmental stewardship.

Company representatives stated that the campaign supports carbon sequestration by increasing the number of trees that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Indigenous species were included to help restore local ecosystems and strengthen biodiversity, while fruit trees will provide households with additional food sources and income opportunities over time.

The initiative aligns with Zambia’s national reforestation agenda and contributes to the goals of African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative, a continent-wide effort to restore degraded landscapes and improve livelihoods.

Environmental experts note that planting trees at household and community level creates long-term impact. When families plant and maintain trees around homes, schools, and public spaces, survival rates increase and communities take ownership of restoration efforts.

Through this campaign, Zambia Sugar is positioning employees as climate action partners. By placing seedlings directly in the hands of its workforce, the company is extending environmental responsibility beyond its estates and into surrounding communities.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to building resilient communities and supporting sustainable development through practical, measurable action.
